The Balatonboglár territory comprises growing areas on the south coast of the lake. The territory made its name primarily through dessert grape growing, although the Tihany Abbey started vine plantations here rather early. Especially with the development of new technologies and the spread of top-level practices did the territory gain nation-wide reputation. A relatively recent surprise of the territory was that conditions here favour some red varieties in addition to light bodied reductive whites, and primarily Merlot is able to yield excellent quality in the moist atmosphere around the lake.
