The Szekszárd territory
Services »

The Szekszárd territory lies on the loess slopes between the Tolna-Baranya Hills and the Danube-side Plain, with Szekszárd in its centre. The fact that the terrain has excellent conditions for growing was already known to the Romans, which can be best testified with the 4th century AD find of a sarcophagus richly decorated with vine motives. It is not only for the name of the town containing the element sex that wines from the territory have been held to be the wines of love; they are easy-going, playful and sensual…The renowned vine of the loess hills around the town is Kadarka a variety neglected for years and successfully brought back after the political changes and the upsurge of independent and traditional wine-making. Other typical varieties are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékfrankos and Merlot. Red cuvées of the territory have an exquisite beauty, out of which Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) contributed most to the establishment of a reputation for Szekszárd wines.
