Somló
Services »

Somló is the smallest wine territory in the country but it has a far-resounding reputation. Somló white wines were well known even in the Middle Ages when they were exported as medicinal products to pharmacies as far as Switzerland. They were reputed to cure cholera, bile stone, renal stone and gastric acid disorders. The Habsburg monarch Maria Theresa also believed in the power of Somló wines and in the ancient legend saying that those who drink Somló wine on their first night /bridal night are bound to have male progeny. She ruled that Habsburg princes should have a glass of Somlai in order to keep up the male line of the Habsburg House. This tiny terrain produces the best white wines of the country, primarily of the Furmint, Hárslevel? and Olaszrizling varieties. A most remarkable product of the territory is Somlói Juhfark, another of the original Hungarian National variety (Hungaricum), which got its name (Sheep’s Tail) of the shape of the grape bunches and yields fabulous rich wine.
