Sopron is one of the traditional wine growing territories yielding red wine. The best part the of vineyards lie on the slopes of the so-called Balf Hills (or Fert?-side Hills). Ever since Roman times Sopron has made the best part of her revenues with the trade of her wines. Sopron Kékfrankos (Blaufrankish) is the flagship of the fleet of wines from the region. A curiosity of the area is that growers here did not have their cellars carved in the hills but built them under their homes. A jewel of the region’s natural beauties is the Fert?-Hanság swampland, part of World Heritage since 2001.
